AI.com domain flips from ChatGPT to Elon Musk's X.ai

Published Reach 37

Elon Musk just seemingly snatched the ultra-valuable AI.com domain, which now redirects to his research outfit X.ai instead of OpenAI's ChatGPT. Premium two-letter domains typically command millions of dollars, turning what looks like a simple redirect into a costly flex between AI rivals.

If you owned the digital equivalent of prime beachfront property on the web, who would you sell it to? The highest bidder, naturally, or whoever wants the ultimate flex.

Back in February, the tech world noticed that the prized domain AI.com had quietly started redirecting straight to ChatGPT. At the time, everyone assumed OpenAI had shelled out millions to capture anyone typing the acronym directly into their browser bar.

Now, the plot has taken a bizarre turn. AI.com no longer goes to OpenAI. It now routes directly to X.ai, Elon Musk's nascent artificial intelligence venture.

A multi-million-dollar redirect

Two-letter .com domains are extraordinarily rare, and one that spells out the biggest tech buzzword on the planet is basically priceless.

To put it in perspective, IT.com reportedly changed hands for $3.8 million last year. Given the historic hype cycle surrounding generative AI, industry watchers assume AI.com would easily command a significantly higher valuation.

The stealth handoff was first spotted by Analytics India Magazine. Beyond the address change, however, the actual mechanics of the deal remain totally opaque. OpenAI never publicly confirmed buying the domain in the first place, and Musk hasn't commented on whether he purchased it or merely secured the lease.

It is entirely possible OpenAI had a rental agreement that expired. Or, perhaps, an astute domain broker parked the traffic on ChatGPT to prove its value, before flipping it to Musk for an even steeper premium.

Big domain, empty website

X.ai is still essentially a blank slate. Launched just this past July with a handful of researchers, its stated mission is to understand the true nature of the universe.

As lofty as that sounds, the actual site offers little more than a splash page and team bios. There are no public models, no consumer interfaces, and zero practical tools ready for testing.

For OpenAI, losing the domain is largely meaningless. ChatGPT is already an established household name, and people find it regardless of the URL bar. But for Musk, scooping up AI.com delivers an instant surge of attention for an outfit that has yet to ship a single product.

Why it matters

For everyday users and builders, this domain shuffle changes nothing in practice. No one relies on typing naked domains to discover mission-critical AI workflows anymore, and you certainly do not need to redirect your daily routine to X.ai.

Industry-wide, however, the maneuver underscores Musk's determination to challenge OpenAI at any cost, even on the symbolic battlefield. X.ai is starting well behind its rivals in shipping infrastructure and consumer tools. Snatching the defining two-letter address of the modern tech era is a classic Musk power move to stake psychological ground.

We think this play is great for generating headlines, but risky for long-term credibility. Grabbing the most authoritative domain on the internet sets sky-high expectations. When curious web surfers land on AI.com only to find an empty landing page and philosophical promises, the contrast between marketing swagger and product reality becomes impossible to ignore. In the AI race, real utility always beats expensive vanity.
