Adobe supercharges Image to Material with AI

Published Reach 31

Adobe just rolled out Substance 3D Sampler 4.2, packing major AI upgrades to its Image to Material and Delighter filters. The release also adds a dedicated Upscale filter and per-layer resolution controls, giving 3D creators much finer control over texture detail and viewport performance.

Snapping a photo of a brick wall and turning it into a production-ready 3D PBR material has always sounded great on paper. In practice, you usually end up with baked-in shadows, muddy textures, and a mountain of cleanup work.

Adobe just rolled out Substance 3D Sampler 4.2 (codenamed Dorayaki), and it tackles those exact pain points with a serious AI overhaul.

Cleaner delighting and smarter upscaling

The headline update is a massive refresh to the Image to Material (AI) and Delighter filters.

Delighting is all about stripping away harsh natural lighting and directional shadows from source photos so textures can be relit accurately inside a 3D engine. The upgraded filter delivers far cleaner base color data without wiping out fine surface micro-details.

Adobe also introduced a dedicated Upscale filter powered by machine learning. It can automatically boost lower-res textures right from the material creation template, and Sampler will even warn you if you attempt a naive linear upscale, nudging you toward the AI alternative instead.

Crucially for workflow responsiveness, computing tasks for both the Image to Material and Upscale layers can now be cancelled almost instantly, sparing artists from annoying viewport freezes while tweaking settings.

Granular per-layer resolution

Beyond AI smarts, Sampler 4.2 introduces a much-needed architectural improvement: Layer Resolution.

Instead of forcing an entire project to compute at a single, memory-heavy resolution, the layer stack now clearly displays the compute size of each individual layer. Artists can toggle specific layers between Document size or Layer Input size on the fly.

Add in a new application toggle to enable or disable GPU-accelerated neural networks, and you get far better control over memory headroom and viewport framerates while building complex surface graphs. Under the hood, the core Substance Engine has also been bumped to version 9.0.1.

Why it matters

For 3D artists, environment designers, and game developers, this release is about practical utility rather than speculative tech demos.

While generative 3D from text prompts remains unpredictable and messy, scanning the real world with a camera and turning it into clean parametric materials is something studios do every single day. By sharpening shadow removal and upscaling directly inside the node tree, Adobe cuts out hours of manual patch-up work in external painting apps.

We think Adobe's decision to focus on workflow ergonomics—like instant task cancellation and per-layer resolution decoupling—is spot on. It respects professional production constraints instead of just chasing AI headlines.

That said, physical capture still has its limits. While the new Delighter handles overcast and ambient light with ease, photos shot under harsh, direct sunlight will likely still require a watchful human eye before heading into an engine asset library.
