OpenAI just appointed Adebayo Ogunlesi, founding partner of Global Infrastructure Partners and a senior managing director at BlackRock, to its board of directors. AI development has officially moved from coding rooms into the realm of concrete, power grids, and multi-billion-dollar infrastructure checks.

OpenAI just announced that Adebayo “Bayo” Ogunlesi is joining its Board of Directors. Ogunlesi is the Founding Partner, Chairman, and CEO of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), one of the world's largest infrastructure investors, as well as a Senior Managing Director at BlackRock.

Before founding GIP in 2006, Ogunlesi spent 23 years at Credit Suisse, eventually serving as Executive Vice Chairman and Head of Global Investment Banking. His background also extends into high-stakes law: he worked at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

He holds a rare triple pedigree with degrees from Oxford (PPE), Harvard Law (JD), and Harvard Business School (MBA), and previously served as the Lead Director at Goldman Sachs. OpenAI Board Chair Bret Taylor emphasized Ogunlesi’s deep track record in navigating complex, global-scale commercial landscapes as the company pushes toward AGI.

Why it matters

AI is no longer just a software race—it is an infrastructure bottleneck. When models require dedicated nuclear reactors, gigawatt-scale data campuses, and tens of billions in up-front capital, having someone who literally wrote the playbook on global infrastructure finance in the boardroom makes total sense.

Ogunlesi brings the kind of heavy-industry financing expertise that OpenAI desperately needs as it blueprints global compute hubs. He knows how sovereign wealth funds, project finance, and regulatory approvals work at scale.

We think this appointment also reflects OpenAI’s ongoing transformation. Following its chaotic board shakeups last year, the company is deliberately fortifying its governance with Wall Street titans who can manage massive balance-sheet realignments. For everyone else in tech, the signal is unmistakable: the compute war is now an industrial mega-project.
