Kai-Fu Lee's 01.AI drops Yi-34B, beating Meta's LLaMA 2
Kai-Fu Lee’s new startup 01.AI just released Yi-34B, an open-source bilingual language model that surged to the top of Hugging Face's base LLM rankings ahead of Meta's LLaMA 2. The company recently hit a $1 billion valuation backed by Alibaba Cloud, with Lee noting they have stockpiled enough AI chips to last at least a year to fuel application development.

Yi-34B is a new open-source bilingual large language model developed by 01.AI, the Chinese AI startup founded by Kai-Fu Lee. It is built to handle both English and Chinese across standard text generation and natural language tasks.
From day one, it aims directly at providing developers with an alternative to Meta's flagship open model.
Benchmark performance
Over the weekend, Yi-34B shot straight to the top of Hugging Face’s leaderboard for pre-trained base LLMs.
In head-to-head testing across critical metrics, it outperformed Meta's LLaMA 2, which has long served as the gold standard for the global open-source community.
The release comes alongside major commercial momentum. 01.AI, which only started operating in June, has reached a $1 billion valuation backed by Sinovation Ventures and Alibaba Cloud. Lee noted that the team stockpiled enough chips early on to keep training and operating for at least a full year.
How developers can use it
Lee positions Yi-34B as a global base layer rather than a regional toy. He points to multinational institutions like global banks and insurers as natural targets for deployment.
While Lee acknowledges that Chinese labs still trail the U.S. in raw foundational frontier tech, he argues that China's strong mobile product ecosystem gives local teams a distinct edge in turning models into practical applications. 01.AI plans to center its strategy on making downstream app building as frictionless as possible.
The model is available right now for download and evaluation on Hugging Face.
Why it matters
If you are an engineer or builder looking for a bilingual open-source engine that does not tie you to closed API providers, Yi-34B is easily worth a benchmark run inside your own evaluation pipeline.
Taking the top spot on Hugging Face proves 01.AI has serious pre-training chops right out of the gate. But beating LLaMA 2 on static benchmarks is only half the battle; the real test begins now, as we see whether global open-source developers actually stick around to build lasting products on top of it.
